From a rooftop in Ho Chi Minh City I enjoyed the January sun, humidity, and an ice-cold Heineken. A city of almost 9 million people looks like a billion with an endless horizon of multi-colored buildings.

The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur are a spectacle any time of day, but especially at night. Standing at 88-stories high, they were the world’s tallest buildings from 1998 through 2004. Damn… right? This is the Adiyogi Shiva statue of the Hindu god Shiva the destroyer. I found out about this new statue finished in February of 2017 located outside of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and had to go see it. It is 112 feet high built entirely out of steel. Shiva is one of Hinduism’s most important gods so the statue gets a ton of traffic year round. I was lucky to see it after a storm had passed so there was an eerie, powerful energy in the air.

As a lover of Anthropology, my trip to Mexico City in March of 2016 was truly eye opening. One can only imagine what the city of Teotihuacan was like when it was at its peak. It is said that the entire city was painted intricately with natural materials.

Located near the border of Argentina, Portillo is a legendary ski resort in the Andes Mountain Range of Chile. With 5 chairlifts and 9 surface lifts, it is a fairly small resort. But when the snow is dumping, skiers have access to endless fresh runs. And what’s the best part? Chile is in the southern hemisphere which means the ski season runs July-October. Yep, I skied in August. I loved this snaky road to the base of the mountain. One of the chairlifts soars above it which added a little fun to our ski days when we waved to Chilean and Argentinian truck drivers and they honked back.

The Ganges River is considered the holy river of Hinduism. Hindus believe that bathing in it causes the remissions of sins and breaks the cycle of reincarnation after death. Here in Varanasi, many Hindus come to die. Cremation ceremonies run 24/7 on the base of the river. After each person is cremated, their ashes are scattered into the Ganges where they are said to be freed from another cycle of life and death.

One of my favorite urban settings in the world: Hong Kong. A city with southeastern Chinese culture and a history of British colonization, it is truly a unique blend of worlds. It is a global financial hub so there is a high level of sophistication while at the same time a casual Asian flare. At my home in Kochi when I was working there, we were fed interesting lunches. Many volunteers protested the food, which was normally just different forms of cooked okra or what Indians call “ladyfingers”. This six-syllabled Sanskrit mantra is spoken in order to transform one’s impure body, speech, and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of Buddha. Dehydration is an understatement. I took an overnight bus with 2 of my friends from Mumbai to Udaipur, India which was supposedly a 12 hour trip. Almost 6 hours had passed and we were still in the traffic of Mumbai. That’s “Indian time” for you. However, I liked my little “personal coffin” (as I called it) on the bus. I observed the hectic city of Mumbai below as I laid in my little cell. What an interesting way to experience the busy streets.

Teotihuacan: an archaeological complex found 30 miles outside of modern day Mexico City that is predicted to have been settled around 400 BC. It is home to the Pyramid of the Sun, the 2nd tallest pyramid in the world. With an advanced social hierarchy, this place once ruled ancient Mesoamerica. Human and animal sacrifice was a common practice for Teotihuacanos and the road called the avenue of death is where many of these deaths occured.

The Meenakshi Amman Hindu temple in Madurai, India. An magical sight sat high above the chaotic city.
